What Does ‘Fiduciary’ Mean for My Financial Advisor?

Classical stone columns

As an independent advisory firm, Manna Wealth Management is not limited to a parent company’s proprietary products or driven by sales quotas. We are compensated through clearly disclosed advisory fees. No fee arrangement is free of potential conflicts, including ours, and our regulatory disclosures describe how we are paid and the conflicts that can create. The fiduciary duty governs those moments: our recommendations must remain focused on what we believe is most appropriate for each client.

Why the Word “Fiduciary” Matters When Choosing an Advisor

Many financial professionals can offer advice, but they do not all operate under the same standard in every relationship. Registered investment advisers have a fiduciary duty that requires them to act in their clients’ best interests and not place their own interests ahead of those they serve.

At Manna Wealth Management, that responsibility means beginning with your life not with a financial product. A fiduciary conversation should consider your complete financial picture, including your investments, tax planning, Social Security decisions, retirement income, estate planning, and the order in which you may eventually draw from your accounts. When these decisions are managed separately, important opportunities and consequences can be overlooked. Coordinating them under one strategy helps ensure that each piece supports the others.

Manna Wealth Management is an SEC-registered fiduciary wealth management firm, and I acquired the firm in 2009. My experience is my own. Registration does not guarantee the quality of an advisor’s work, but it is an important fact that prospective clients can independently verify.

Before selecting an advisor, ask a direct question: “Will you act as a fiduciary for me, in writing, throughout our entire relationship?” The clarity of the answer can tell you a great deal.

You can verify an advisor’s registration, professional background, and reported disciplinary history through the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database at adviserinfo.sec.gov.
